The early life gut microbiota and atopic disease

چکیده
Background Asthma is the most prevalent of all childhood diseases and accounts for the majority of hospitalizations and school absences in children [1]. Current mouse model research has identified the early life gut microbiota as a potential therapeutic target for the prevention of asthma and atopic diseases [2-4]. We hypothesize that the early life gut microbiota could play a similar preventative role against atopic disease development in humans.

The role of the intestinal microbiota in the development of atopic disorders.
The prevalence of atopic diseases, including eczema, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma, has increased worldwide, predominantly in westernized countries. Recent epidemiological studies and experimental research suggest that microbial stimulation of the immune system influences the development of tolerance to innocuous allergens. The gastrointestinal microbiota composition may be of particu...
متن کاملImportance of microbial colonization of the gut in early life to the development of immunity.
The mammalian gastrointestinal tract harbors a complex microbiota consisting of between 500 and 1000 distinct microbial species. Comparative studies based on the germ-free gut have provided clear evidence that the gut microbiota is instrumental in promoting the development of both the gut and systemic immune systems. Early microbial exposure of the gut is thought to dramatically reduce the inci...

Evidence is supported the hypothesis that any changes in the composition and function of the gut microbiota play a fundamental role in a number of chronic inflammatory diseases including celiac disease (CD). In the last decade, several culture-independent methods have been developed to identify the components of the human microbiome. The study of microbiota based on nucleic acid analysis found ...
متن کاملLow diversity of the gut microbiota in infants with atopic eczema.
BACKGROUND It is debated whether a low total diversity of the gut microbiota in early childhood is more important than an altered prevalence of particular bacterial species for the increasing incidence of allergic disease. The advent of powerful, cultivation-free molecular methods makes it possible to characterize the total microbiome down to the genus level in large cohorts. OBJECTIVE We sou...
متن کاملExternal Influence of Early Childhood Establishment of Gut Microbiota and Subsequent Health Implications
Postnatal maturation of immune regulation is largely driven by exposure to microbes. The gastrointestinal tract is the largest source of microbial exposure, as the human gut microbiome contains up to 10(14) bacteria, which is 10 times the number of cells in the human body. Several studies in recent years have shown differences in the composition of the gut microbiota in children who are exposed...
